Registration

In Alberta, the legislation regulating the profession of midwifery requires that a person must be registered with the College of Midwives of Alberta (CMA) and hold an active practice permit to practice midwifery in the province.

The role of the CMA is to regulate the profession of Midwifery in Alberta. As part of this mandate, the CMA sets standards for entry-level requirements for safe and ethical practice.

For registration, an applicant must:

- have a degree, diploma or certificate in a Midwifery Program approved* by the CMA Council,

- have a combination of education, experience, practice or other qualifications, determined by the Registrar or Registration Committee to be substantially equivalent to the item above and that demonstrates the competence required for registration as a regulated member,

- have completed the requirements above within two years of application, or

- have completed an approved refresher program within one year of application.

*Approved program means educational programs that are recognized by the College of Midwives of Alberta. Currently these include: University of British Columbia, McMaster University, Toronto Metropolitan University, and Laurentian University, Universite de Trois-Rivieres, University of Manitoba and Mount Royal University.

Please note: Midwifery services are publicly funded through Alberta Health Services. We recommend that if you are applying for any midwifery position you contact Alberta Health Services PMAO at:  midwives@ahs.ca  to learn about their appointment and privileging process and to ensure the position is funded. Also, AHS is responsible for approving your insurance (requirement for registration) and they will only do so once you have a secured AHS midwifery position.

While all applicants must meet the registration requirements, there are different pathways to registration.

All applications received will be processed by College staff. If it is clear that the applicant meets all registration requirements, the Registrar will approve the application. In the case the Registrar has doubts about whether an applicant meets the requirements or believes that conditions or restrictions need to be imposed, the Registrar will refer the application to the Registration Committee for a decision.

You may not work as a Midwife or use the Midwife title or initials (e.g. Midwife, Registered Midwife, R.M.) in Alberta until you have received written confirmation from the CMA that your certificate of registration and practice permit has been issued.

Land Acknowledgment

This land currently called Alberta is where the College of Midwives of Alberta (CMA) is situated, since colonialism. Long before our time, this land was the ancestral, traditional home to many Indigenous Peoples. CMA wishes to acknowledge and honour the 45 First Nations of people who were part of Treaty 6, 7, 8 signings, the Treaty 10 signings with the Metis Nations and the Indigenous Peoples, their elders past and present, who draw their ancestral lines from this land. Their history, language and culture have and will continue to influence this community. CMA honours Indigenous midwives past and present, as being integral to Indigenous Culture.
